Sustainable Development Goal 16

The U.N sustainable development goals are a series of goals that the international community is working towards. One of those goals is Goal 16. Goal 16 is about “peace, justice, and strong institution” to reduce the amount of violence in the world, promoting peace, stopping child abuse, and maintaining the law of war. The goal has 12 objectives that must be achieved by 2030 in order to be successful.

The Sustainable development goal has 12 objectives that have different missions under the “peace, justice, and strong institution” slogan. Target 1 of the sustainable development goal is to reduce the amount of violence worldwide. This is in order to reduce the number of intentional homicides per 100,000 people by sex and age. It is also trying to protect people from conflict and making sure people feel safe living in the area that they live in. Target 2 is trying to protecting kids from abuse and torture. It wants to reduce the total amount of abuse direct towards children age 1–17 and to eliminate human trafficking. Target 3–5 talks about how to promote the law and justice and to stop the illegal funding of criminals. This is in order to promote peace and justice but also to promote a proper prosecution of a person. One of the main goals is to stop corruption to government officials and high-ranking civilians as this undermines the act of democracy. Target 7–9 are about the access to international recognization of a country and to have a better global governing. This is to help ensure that we recognize the sovereignty of countries during war and to have better decision making on how to stop wars and to promote peace making. This is making it so that it is vital to promote good decision making on the international level to help smaller countries with recognization and trade. The final three problem area is about having access to information and reducing terrorism and crime.

The main problem area that we face is that there is too little enforcement of the sustainable goals and that country is getting more violent and the goals are not working. A study conducted by the Anti-Corruption committee has now introduced that corruption is getting worse in most countries because of greediness and the want for power. People undermine the system and they get power in illegal ways. Also, the wars in Syria and Yemen are getting worse as international patterns such as Iran and Saudi Arabia, fund opposing sides and that leads to heavy civilian casualty on both sides. The main issue is that the main international governing body, the U.N, is failing at managing crisis and they do not know how to solve these international wars and debates. Their own set of goals must be regulated by an international group, and the U.N, the only major international group in that field are not taking their job seriously.

My proposed solution to this international solution is simple. We need a larger presence of the U.N in international conflicts to help resolve tensions and wars. If there is an international body that can solve issues and have a presence in the region, the chance of conflict is lower. The U.N will promote peace and nation-building along with laying the foundations of democracy such as elections and a good justice system. If there is an international body that can help us govern international conflicts, the chance of another war diminishes. My main propose solution to this problem is having a stronger presence of international body from around the world to help smaller nations
